It's A Boy!

Here's our long awaited surprise!!! Instead of bringing home a baby this past weekend, we decided to bring home a very hairy bundle of joy.

Introducing...

Griswold Uguyses!

He's an 11 week old American Bulldog who is playful and loves to chillax...just what we need. We're getting him accustomed to our house and his big sister, Ellie May. She's a blind Maltipoo and very territorial, but not taking the new addition too hard. Griswold really wants to play with her, but she's NOT having it. Guess we'll be making a bunch of trips to the doggie park so that he can make some friends!

He's already a Gamecock fan!

We had a great vacation at the beach last week. Just what we needed! Now, back to the real world and training our newest family member! Please comment if you have any training tips for American Bulldogs...we would be much obliged!

I love his name! Your mom told me to check out your blog because it would make me smile and she was so right! I love him so much already and can't wait to meet him.

So you want advice? Whatever you think is cute as a puppy may not be so cute when he is 60 pounds! Shelby use to be so cute when she would jump up and kiss me and WELL...NOT SO CUTE NOW because sometimes I think she will eat my face!

As far as training goes, we kennel trained her from day one and she now loves her kennel. Like a baby, she has a routine and she likes it. Good luck honey, they are truly the best dogs in the world.

Hopefully yours isn't a humper!

Okay seriously, I love this those little ears. I want to snuggle with that cute little furry bundle!!! :) You also got my favorite breed of all time -- American Bulldogs are smart, curious, and full of energy! Here are some things that really really helped in the first year of puppydom:

*Kennel your dog at night. Take him out when he whines at night and make it all business--no playing then. He'll get use to not going in his kennel since that's where he sleeps.
*When he goes to the bathroom outside, praise him while he's in the middle of doing it so he gets the point that it is a good thing.
*If you have to leave him alone during the day, put his kennel in an easy to clean area like a tiled laundry room. Keep the kennel open, paper the floor so he can use the bathroom when he needs to. When you get home, it's easy to clean up and he can see that you're not mad at him for going on the floor.
*Put a bell on the door that he will start to associate with going outside. Eventually he'll get the hint and start ringing the bell to let you know when he needs to go out. VERY handy for the rest of their lives!
*Touch his nails and paws daily so he gets use to it.
*Ambulls have a TON of energy. Try to walk twice a day to keep him calm and relaxed. Even if they are short walks, it will do wonders. I walked both of my dogs about four miles each day...building up when the distance when they were little.
*Ambulls are going to chew. Every time he starts to chew something inappropriate: say no firmly, take object away, replace with chew toy.
*Ambulls can be grumpy when they get older if they aren't socialized properly....start out young and get as many people and dogs to play with him as possible.

They are such great dogs. You are going to love having him as part of your family! I know I'm dying to get out of the hospital to see my Sweetpea!!! :)

Oh I highly recommend Crate training....our bulldog loves her crate and still went in it when the door was open and she didnt "have to" - it becomes their safe spot.

Jessica said...

Thank you Kim...yes, we are crate training and he is very used to it now. We don't hear a peep all night, and he's only had 1 accident in it! We have yet to get him to just go in there to hang out, but I'm sure that will come with time.

Lis, I got him from my best friend in Alabama...her sister's dog had the litter!

He is precious!

In the middle of all our failing IF treatments, over memorial day weekend, we added another dog to our home. I am a HUGE lover of Beagles, and we found Claire, who was a chunky 9wk old. Now she is almost 6months old.
